It seems like there's a way to do this that avoids any antagonism. How `bout starting with a Thursday evening food truck festival in Lamont Park to encourage neighborhood residents to meet each and help clean up/improve the park so it's more community oriented?
We could also focus at first only food trucks that did not serve foods already available in Mt Pleasant (so, no Korean, Mexican, or pizza, yes to Indian, Merlindian, kabobs, etc.) to avoid directly competing with brick and mortar.
It'd be a great evening compliment during the summers to the Saturday morning farmer's market and give us another all-too-rare opportunity to mix as a community. |

It's actually a pretty good idea, and I'd think it's doable. I live in the SW Waterfront area now (thinking about moving to Mt. Pleasant, which is why I'm reading the forum) and a year or two ago they started having small parties at "The Landing" by 7th Street. At first it was just a hot dog stand, but now there's a couple food trucks, lights strung on some trees, live music, cornhole, and bocce every Thursday in the summer. Very low-key, I think most people bring their own lawn chairs and just hang out. Granted, there's more food options in Mt. Pleasant than SW, but I don't think the impact on their business would be that devastating. I think they have a Facebook page if you'd want to try and contact someone for advice on how to start something up.
Also, for getting food trucks you could try contacting the DC Food Truck Association. I also know one of the guys organizing the food trucks for Truckeroo and The Fairgrounds (formerly the Bullpen by the Nats Stadium). If you have difficulty I could get you his info.

Edit: oops, I lied. The Farmers Market is on Thursday, music on Fridays |

| That 7th street landing event is exactly what I had in mind. I think we could easily support something like this once a week but I don't know who would be the group to organize it. People pay dues to the MPNA. Is there money in any of these groups to rent some chairs and print some flyers? I think if we become a little more proactive as a community we can really boost our quality of life and draw some nicer amenities to MTP street. Let's see how the first event goes and get an idea of how many people are into it. If we need to we can scale back the number of trucks and do it more often. I do think some games and lights and seating would really bring it all together. Anyone have a cornhole set up? |

Thanks, Harry. I really am curious about how this night will go. I ascribe to the underpromise/overdeliver theory, so I am hoping this is successful for the food trucks and gets the community charged up. MPBA is planning a big event on June 10, and I hope they come out on this night to let people know about it.
While I think everyone has great ideas on how to make this night better than or more than what I've set out to do, any "activities" other than people lining up for the food trucks brings this night into DPR permit territory...and with that comes a slew of issues and regulations I'm not sure I have the time to handle right now. (I also ascribe to the "ask forgiveness, not permission" theory, which works. Most of the time. Well, enough of the time. )
I do have plans to disseminate the details of 4/26 to various blogs, listservs, etc., including all the ones mentioned here, but not until about a week or so before. Timing is difficult: too soon and people forget, ya know? And I also plan to take people up on their offers to help! |
