our condo building got broken into last week. We are located on Brown and Newton. The same day, our neighbor next door also got broken into. This is the second time this month.

Last night, my friend's car was broken into. His window was smashed.

My car was broken into twice this month.

What the heck is going on? How do we get more police presence in our neighborhood?

To be accurate, those are burglaries, not robberies. There's been a rash of burglaries lately, seven in the past 30 days, including three on Brown Street, one nearby on Meridian. This invariably are due to youths crossing 16th from Columbia Heights. Brown Street, being somewhat isolated, is especially vulnerable.

Your best defense against burglaries is watchful neighbors. I'm sure the police are aware of the problem, but the occasional patrol by a squad car isn't a very effective deterrent. The bad guys just wait until the police are out of sight.

Three burglaries, essentially simultaneous, daytime. I believe the start/end times correspond to the times that the residents left in the morning, then returned to find their homes burglarized. -- Jack
