RECORD EVENT REPORT...CORRECTED
NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE BALTIMORE MD/WASHINGTON DC
0553 PM EDT MON JUL 25 2011

...RECORD HIGH MINIMUM TEMPERATURE SET FOR SUN JUL 24 AT WASHINGTON NATIONAL DC...

A RECORD HIGH MINIMUM OF 84 DEGREES WAS SET AT WASHINGTON NATIONAL DC YESTERDAY. THIS BREAKS THE OLD RECORD OF 81 SET IN 2010.

THIS ALSO TIES THE RECORD FOR HIGHEST MINIMUM TEMPERATURE EVER RECORDED AT WASHINGTON NATIONAL.

A NEW RECORD FOR NUMBER OF CONSECUTIVE DAYS WHERE THE TEMPERATURE HAS NOT GONE BELOW 80 DEGREES WAS SET YESTERDAY. THERE NOW HAVE BEEN 4 CONSECUTIVE DAYS WHERE THE TEMPERATURE HAS NOT DROPPED BELOW 80 DEGREES. THE PREVIOUS RECORD WAS 2 DAYS WHICH WAS SET IN 2010...2006...1999...1987...1983...1959...1949 AND 1876.

Yes, many street trees in the neighborhood are suffering from drought. See below for just one example. It's easy to be oblivious to street trees, as if they're not our problem. But if nature doesn't water them, they will suffer and die, because the District certainly isn't going to do it. It's up to us to notice the trees around our houses, and provide water, at times like this. The little bit of rain we got last week was far short of sufficient to meet the needs of our smaller, shallower-rooted street trees.
