Arrest Made in Burglary in Progress

(Washington, DC) — Detectives from the Metropolitan Police Department’s Third District announced an arrest has been made in a burglary in progress.

On Wednesday, March 9, 2011 at approximately 2 pm, units from the Third District received a call for a burglary in progress. The caller stated that a man just broke out a rear window of a house in the 1700 block of Kilbourne Place and entered the home. There was no one at home.

A mountain bike officer was in the block on burglary patrol when the radio run was voiced. He immediately went to the rear of the house and observed a broken rear window. The officer called for additional units to assist in the front of the location. The officer observed a subject looking out a second level rear window.

As other units arrived, the subject climbed out of the window and up on to the roof. The subject proceeded to a second house in the 3100 block of 17th St NW, where he kicked in a skylight and entered a second home where the owner was inside. Once inside the house the owner ran out to the street. The officers were able to talk the subject in to surrendering himself without incident.

The suspect has been identified as 51-year-old Willie Gray of the 1300 block of Congress Street, SE. He has been charged with Burglary One and Burglary Two.

“An alert citizen notified police and a sharp officer on his beat observed the suspect committing a burglary,” said Police Chief Cathy L. Lanier. “This is an excellent example of community policing at work.”

A couple of weeks ago our car window was smashed in and a few small items were stolen. The same day my wife caught someone rummaging through our unlocked van. I have seen what seems to me an epidemic of broken car windows in the neighborhood lately. I hope this is the guy responsible. Broken windows seem like his MO and the details of the perp given above are roughly consistent with my wife's description.
