|
|
Our backroom appears to have had wallpaper put over the original plaster and then paint put over the wallpaper. The paper is now peeling off, pulling off the plaster which appears to be put right on the brick firewall. We are debating covering the whole thing up with drywall versus taking it all down and replastering.
Any ideas/recommendations? Any suggestions on folks to use?
THANKS! |

Some possible approaches:
1.) Steam off the wallpaper, then patch and paint. I did this long ago with a rented steamer, probably from Brookland Hardware. Cool thing - I found a note penciled on the plaster about the point spread for a pro football game from the 1950s (I think).
2.) Cover w/ 1/4" drywall, which probably ain't available at Home Depot, but can be had at a building supply store. When I did this on a second-floor wall, I affixed the drywall with adhesive, but also carefully with 3/8" screws (using a screw gun) to hold the drywall in place until the glue set. It was a rather make-do approach - screwing into plaster, making sure to use low torque - but it's still holding (knock plaster) almost 20 years later. An upside of 1/4" plaster, in some locations - depending on visibility and your aesthetic sense - you can apply it without pulling off the baseboards. Just butt the drywall to the baseboard and caulk. |
