Midweek meals always tend to be uninspired. Escape the midweek slump and the city itself by enjoying a picnic at the Smithsonian’s National Zoo’s free summer concert series, Sunset Serenades. Enjoy performances Thursday evenings (starting July 22-August 5) at 6:30 p.m. on Lion/Tiger Hill as the sun sets. You are welcome to bring your own picnic basket or purchase food, ice cream, beer and wine from Zoo vendors.
The bands range from jazz and folk to blues and rock and roll. On July 22nd, be whisked away by the jazz/calypso melodies of the Steve Scott Project. If psychedelic blues is more your style, wait for the July 29th performance by GHZ (Gigahertz) Band and Show. The Grandsons, a blender mix of New Orleans rhythm and blues, rockabilly, swing and country two-step, ends the Sunset Serenades series on August 5th.
We encourage everyone to take public transportation to the Zoo. Parking at the Zoo fills quickly, and parking in the neighborhood is very limited. Take Metrorail to the Woodley Park-Zoo/Adams Morgan station or Metrobus routes L1, L2, or L4 (use the Connecticut Avenue entrance), or route H4 (use the Harvard Street entrance). Parking Lots D and E are the closest to Lion/Tiger Hill.
