That's very much what we're proposing for Mount Pleasant Street:
http://mtpleasantdc.org/forum/viewtopic.php?t=6475
The ANC "informal" meeting of April 6 focused on this topic. My notion for the transformation of Mount Pleasant Street into a "pedestrian encounter zone" begins with the block north of Lamont, and would provide for sidewalk cafes at all the restaurants along that block, should they wish to follow Don Juan's very successful example.
At the April 20 meeting, the ANC passed a resolution calling for the extension of this "pedestrian priority" concept to Mount Pleasant Street from Irving Street to Park Road.

This is exciting stuff. Is there anyway that the average Mt. P. resident can support this initiative?
Thanks.

Sure is. Tell Councilmember Graham that you want to see this tried in Mount Pleasant. -- Jack

Thanks for the link -- I'd never have come across that myself.
Concerning outdoor seating, the sidewalk cafe at Don Juan's is a great success, and really enhances the ambience of the street. People at the outdoor tables create a safe, friendly atmosphere to the street.
I have a notion to permit sidewalk cafes at all the restaurants along the row from Marleny's to Heller's, by turning the sidewalk into cafe space, and replacing the car parking strip with "curbless sidewalk".
Imagine what the scene below would be like if you saw people seated at tables, enjoying outdoor eating, instead of that sterile line of cars.

| Sounds good to me Jack. I think the more outdoor seating options there are the more likely we will be able to nurture the idea of Mount Pleasant as a restaurant row and eventually attract new restaurants to the neighborhood.

A good Streets-For-All approach would be a nice bright 2-way bike lane up the center of MtP Street. Safer than bike lanes next to parked cars, and keeps and enhances the current neighborhood-ness of the street. Cars on MtP Street are a very basic part of the neighborhood. IME, compliance with the crosswalk at Kilbourne is the best in the city (don't mean to damn with faint praise). Reminds me of California, where compliance is normal. In other words, cars respect pedestrians on MtP Street.
I say all this as someone who shops on MtP Street by walking there.

| These are great ideas (loved the link to Oak Cliff), but how exactly does Joe Sixpack work to get it done? ANC has wrote a letter, now what can we do?

Communicate your enthusiasm to Jim Graham. DDOT is currently pleading poverty. Director Gabe Klein is very supportive of these notions, but he's got no funds for anything but basic maintenance. Council hasn't got any money to spare either, but that could change in a year or two, and then perhaps we can make some progress.
These things take time, as a political base is built. The Councilmember has to be persuaded that there's lots of neighborhood support for these ideas, and then he may press for funds (in a future budget) to get DDOT going.

That's a cool video, though I think the guerilla urban planning would never fly in this neighborhood, where every little proposal or concept has to be run by a dozen community groups. Just doing it is heresy around here.
Further, Mount Pleasant Street has little in common with that street. It's already only 2 lanes of traffic, and traffic is slow moving most of the time. There is no bike lane on the block in front of Heller's, of course, but it would be nice if there were. So it seems that they were solving a different problem.
Sure it would be nice to have more outdoor seating. What's the obstacle? The sidewalks are not narrow. Why do you have to eliminate parking to do that? It's nice to have parking when you're unloading laundry or buying a gallon of milk or a heavy load of groceries, and it's not like the neighbors on surrounding blocks welcome people parking in front of houses.
If you're cutting traffic access on MtP St, where's it supposed to go? Would Lamont and 17th become two way? It's hard to enjoy outdoor seating when the traffic pattern just creates idling cars, so that's key as well.

Exactly! Lots and lots of planning for getting cars off some streets or limiting access, but I've never seen a mention of the streets that should handle the displaced traffic or of any efforts to improve throughput. For example, Irving used to have timed lights for its 2 lanes all the way to the hospital. The timing was destroyed some years ago and now it seems that Irving is becoming 1 lane east of 14th. So, 1/2 the capacity of 20 years ago. Hmmm? Fewer cars? Or, some new route for the cars to travel? Don't think so.
Seems to be the a corollary to Field of Dreams - Choke the streets and they won't come.
Really?

Valid complaints certainly. I can think of no worse a group of peolpe to run a city than the asshats mbarry stuck with us until they start to die off.
However, here we are. What does one do from here? It might be us over-educated gentrifing yuppies (not the ironic ones of course or those thatve been here since 'back in the day') are too smart to let progress happen rather than the nimby subsection.
We can always 'what if' an idea infinitely and go nowhere.

I hope the "Encounter Zone" will incorporate existing ideas such as the ones from the formal charette performed a few years ago. It is attached and advocates many of the same items.

I think the sidewalks are too narrow for reasonable sidewalk cafes. I recall when Tonic (under its previous name) had a sidewalk cafe, and pedestrians were pretty tightly squeezed between the tables and the parking meters. But I should go take a closer look.

No one is proposing "cutting traffic access" to Mount Pleasant Street. Traffic is simply slowed to a pedestrian-friendly pace.
That would, of course, deter drivers in a hurry, those simply using Mount Pleasant Street as a through route to get to Park Road or Lamont Street. Let them stick to the proper "arterial" routes through and around Mount Pleasant.

You're right, I had forgotten about this report. Lots of good advice in it.
