PostPosted: Thu Feb 11, 2010 2:23 pm    Post subject: what about our responsability to clear sidewalks and alleys? Reply with quote

I am really dissapointed to see how bad my neighboors are keeping with their responsability of clearing the snow in sidewalks and alleys and I do not know what I am supossed to do...
just take a look at the 1900-1950 block of Lamont St (between 19th and Waldbridge) and you will see...
the alley behind 19th is almost clear by now; compare it with the alley behind Lamont... it is a mess despite some well intentionated efforts...
I understand people care about their own retaining wall or cars but come on guys if we do not cooperate our alleys and sidewalks will remain impassable for weeks!!!!
let's take advantage of the sun and clean at least a passage so the snow can melt...
thanks
Gisela

Paolo was certainly helpful in the clearing of a route through the alley from Lamont to Park Road, between 19th and Walbridge. I'll be happy to repay the favor in shoveling the alley down to Walbridge. -- Jack

thanks Jack. will take the offer this weekend for sure!

have you guys seen the sidewalks in Park Road all the way up between Walbridge and 17? had to pass by today and, with some honorable exceptions, sidewalks are a mess. be careful as I felt today once already. who's responsability is this anyway? how is this enforced?

The residents of the homes are responsible for clearing their sidewalks. Unfortunately, group homes and rental units are notorious for failing to do this job. There is no enforcement. But if anyone slips and is injured on ice in front of one of these homes, that person has a fine case for a liability lawsuit.

People are still walking in the street on Park Road, a very hazardous situation. I'd go up Lamont, myself, rather than Park Road.

The east-west routes are still jammed, in large part because of failure to clear key intersections. For example, the little half-block of Irving between 16th and Mount Pleasant is still one lane. That section is usually 4 lanes (1 lane parking), and it serves at least 5 bus routes. So, it's down to one lane, and the buses are loading/unloading in the driving lane. No wonder traffic doesn't move.
