Anyone have a clue what's going on in the neighborhood? Newton ST has been a parking lot (complete with honking) since roughly 7:30a.m. I could hear the sirens of an emergency vehicle trying to get through - never saw pass by.

About 200 people have been displaced by the near-total destruction of a 4-story apartment building at 3145 MtP Street. MtP and 16th Streets are shut down -- maybe for the day. The blaze was still active this morning at about 8:30.
I'm told everyone was safely evacuated and are being housed at 1480 Girard Street NW. Please make donations and offers of assistance there. There is a "Mr. Payne" who is coordinating services for the displaced.

Oh my goodness... that's horrible! Do you know how to get in touch with Mr. Payne?

I don't have a number for the rec center on Girard, but you could probably drop by to offer help. Also, donations can be coordinated through Neighbors Consejo. See Graham's note here:
Dear Friends:
We have been on the scene of a five alarm fire at 3145 Mt Pleasant St, NW since 1am this morning.
Luckily no one was injured.
The fire department's response was great and the water pressure was superb.
This horrendous fire affected six buildings including the Meridian Hill Baptist Church. About 200 people have been displaced. Metro buses were brought in to keep people warm before moving everyone to the Columbia Heights Community Center at 15th and Girard St, NW. We have been working with the residents all morning to attend to their human needs.
Low-income residents were the highest affected.
Neighbors' Consejo is taking food and clothing donations at 3118 16th St, NW. Please consider making a donation. You can reach Evar Sandoval at (202) 234-6855 for more details.
Bests, Councilmember Jim Graham

Sorry to make you repeat yourself, I just saw all the original postings elsewhere in the forum.
Thanks for the info.

Hi,
I called the community center (202)671-0373.
They said I can make a donation to the DC Chapter of the American Red Cross
