Anyone know if a feral rabbit colony in Mt. P?
I have seen kids chasing a full-size multi-colored rabbit in the ally between 18, 19, Kenyon and Kilbourne and last night there was a small/juvenile black rabbit being chased by cats. I and several neighbors tried to catch it and called animal control when we could not. They said there have been multiple calls about rabbits from Mt. P so they think that they are feral.

| I saw a young rabbit sitting by the curb near Kilbourne & 19th this morning 9-25-06. This little rabbit was all black and looked in good shape, but she hid under a parked car when I got close. I hope they survive. |

I live on Lamont Street and have 3 house rabbits of my own and work at a bunny rescue. I alerted the local bunny rescue about these rabbits and am waiting for a response. I have looked up and down the area where you guys said there are rabbits and didnt spot them. If anyone spots a rabbit please call 202-588-1751 and let me know where you saw them, time, and describe the rabbit so I can sense if its more than one rabbit.
Hopefully once I get the rescue involved we can get these guys out of the alley. |

Kelly,
If this is an all black rabbit do you think it is a domestic escapie? Do ferrel rabbits come in black?
I'm just curious because I have never seen rabbits in Mt.P nor have I seen wild rabbits in black but I'm not from this part of the country originally so back squirrels were a shock for me to see too. |

Kelly,
The small black on was in front of our house on Kilbourne near 19th yesterday morning. It started on the south side and crossed to the north side. It is not shy about crossing the street and quite adept at hiding behind car tires and under the middle of the cars when you try to catch it.
Many folks seem to have seen it. Once you hear from the rescue group, should we post some flyers telling people who see it who to call when they spot it?

Hi,
I'm Natalie, Kelly's partner. We haven't heard from the rescue group yet, but we have contacted them. These are almost certainly not wild bunnies, but domestic bunnies that either escaped, or more likely, were released when they were no longer wanted. Hopefully, they are not totally feral, so they can be homed. Kelly and I have been exploring the allies between Kilbourne, Kenyon 18th and 19th...but, are they actually hanging out on the streets as well? We put some bunny food out for them in the allies, but no luck yet. |

There is a group house on Kilborne between Mt. P and 17th street that has rabbits--a LOT of them. They have rabbit pens in their yard. They also have a HUGE rat problem because they keep the rabbit feed out.
I know someone who used to live there and said that the place was GROSS, full of rats in the house and roaches. Another friend interviewed at the house a while back.
I can give you more information about the owners and the address if you contact me privately. I can also put you in touch with the previous tenant if you want more details. |
