LED lights, promising higher efficiency and reliability than the metal-vapor lights. This is in the alley between Irving and Hobart. These lights are supposed to be installed in all the alleys here. You can easily see the difference, as the LED lights are an array of individual lights, not one great big light. Like a multiple-LED flashlight.
Photos: installation of the light, then the group watching attentively and waiting for the new light to be switched on. Mayor Gray, and Councilmembers Graham and Cheh. Lots of Channel 4 people around.

First the alley, now the lights.
The question now is: Who lives in this street and yields so much power at City Hall?? |

Going to my garage Wednesday morning, I was surprised to find it blocked by a bucket truck, lifting a worker into place to replace our alley light with the new LED version. I was pleased to see them (our alley light has been troublesome) and didn't mind waiting while they finished the job.
About the new light: it's no brighter than the old ones (1.1 foot-candles at the ground, vs. 1.3, an insignificant difference), but it's much bluer, and thus seems brighter.
Mainly, the new lights should be more reliable than the old. These lights include radio transmitters to indicate any fault and bring a quick repair. Reliability is great, because losing a light in an alley makes for some serious darkness.

I have to admit to feeling this way as someone who lives close to the 16th st "border" of the 'hood. We've had disentigrating curbs replaced by asphalt (still there by the way) and crumbling sidewalks, but the further I walk back into our neighborhood (away from 16th toward the zoo) our neighborhood really starts looking quite nice.
I start feeling like the jealous step-child.
PS - I really am happy for your alley lights _________________ - Jenn |
