Hi Guys,

While you are out there voting 6-0 or 5-0 for resolutions commending the work of DDOT or other DC agencies, could you please come down a bit to consider the daily things that would need fixing and where the ANC could have a real impact?

Sidewalks and back alleys come to mind.
The back alleys in Mt Pleasant are in dire need of repaving. We complain, we write but nothing happens.

I wrote to my ANC rep (China) but she is clearly too busy to answer. Have not heard from her since the day after the elections.
So now I write to the rest of the list as I know that at least Jack will read this.

Why isn't the ANC voting to put this issue on the radar screen of the DC agency in charge of these?

Maybe the ANC could vote 6-0 to call for DDOT (if that's the correct agency) to come have a look?

Thanks,

Ilana

Shirley, you jest. Or, perhaps it would help expedite matters if you include in your request a proviso that a portion of said alley be set aside as a bike lane.

Ilana, while the alley behind my house (1800 Kilbourne/Kenyon) was redone w/in the past 10 years and is fine, I second your request as a matter of solidarity. Also because I, too, have not received a reply from China about an issue. Though, it's just been a week and there may well be a legit reason for that. Job... Life in general...

Hi Guys,

Guys? Our ANC is now majority-female. Well, I dunno, maybe the term "guys" includes women, these days.

"Commending the work of DDOT or other DC agencies" -- what's that refer to? I don't believe we've done that, and I am inclined to avoid such things, not wanting to open the Pandora's box of who gets a commendation, and who doesn't. What ANC action is this in reference to?

This is an ongoing issue, citywide. Alleys everywhere are a mess, and the District seems to have enough trouble maintaining actual streets. There was an alley repaving project here a few years ago, which stopped when it ran out of money. So half the alley between 19th Street and Adams Mill Road is in fine shape, and half in dreadful shape.

Calling on your own ANC commissioner is the right thing to do, FWIW. If "the ANC" takes up the issue of alleys, the question arises of which alleys warrant attention, and which are tolerable, and are the six single-member districts being fairly treated.

But don't count on your commissioner being able to get anything done. Yes, I've gotten one alley repaved, in my eight years on the commission, but it was in such awful shape that it threatened real damage to any car attempting to pass through it.

It's all about priorities, in a time of severe budget pressures. At what point is alley pavement so bad that it warrants repaving, presumably at the expense of other District needs? How bad does an alley have to be? I don't know, really. If it's damaging cars, sure. If it forces drivers to go really slow -- well, that's not such a bad thing. Our nicely paved alleys have turned into speeding-traffic routes, favored by drivers bypassing the congestion and traffic lights on Park Road. So residents now ask for speed bumps to slow alley traffic, for good reason.

If you've got one alley that is in especially bad shape, then by all means, call on your commissioner.

Between Irving and Hobart. This alley is a disgrace.

Holes that hold water deep enough for the rats to drown (if they didn't know how to swim) and can't be too good for mosquitoes control.
Brick, pavement, concrete, asphalt, dirt, gravels, you name it, we have it here.

China is MIA so far. Maybe Jack can deliver the note (or tell her to check her mail from time to time..).

Thanks.

Yes, I know that alley is in really poor shape. Not in my district, so I'm inclined to leave that to the appropriate commissioner. -- Jack

Thanks Jack.

I'll try to contact China by phone. I'd wish she could just check the mail here (she used it a lot before the elections, so it's not like she does not know how to do it) as calling requires a good timing and availability on both parts that email does not need. (for example, I doubt she would answer the phone at this hour...)

Thanks anyway.

Ilana
