| A neighbor was mugged on Adams Mill Rd. near the corner of Walbridge Place last night (12/09). I do not know the exact time, but it was around 9:00PM. Two young men hit him in the face with a brick and attempted to steal his phone. The police responded quickly. Those are all the details I have. |

Fortunately he appeared to be unhurt, and was a bit taken aback by the fleet of police cars that showed up. -- Jack |

| Yes, it is fortunate that he is unhurt. I am quite happy that a fleet of police cars arrives when a violent assault and attempted robbery occurs in the neighborhood. I only wish the thugs had been caught and arrested. |

The victim's injuries were more severe than I thought:
. . . two teenagers throwing a brick in the face of our 21-year-old housemate in an attempt to steal his cell phone. Needless to say Andrew was unhinged; he nursed a bruised face and missed a day of work and a day's pay.
I do advise people to be careful out on the streets. Adams Mill Road, for one, seems to be a conduit for rough youths from the direction of Adams Morgan. It's also relatively secluded, with houses on only one side of the street, and a tall retaining wall hiding much of the sidewalk from homes on the east side of the street. For would-be robbers, it's a tempting location to do their crimes.
In general, despite the prosperous appearance and apparent safety of our streets, one has to be watchful and wary, especially when alone on any street. One rule of urban life is to avoid being wrapped up in a cellphone conversation while walking on a dark and deserted street. Put the cellphone away, and be visibly alert and watchful. Be aware of the possibility of somebody coming up behind you, or coming towards you and about to sucker-punch you.
The best defense we have against such young toughs is the watchful neighbor. It's unfortunate that people these days spend their time indoors, at a computer or watching TV, and don't do much sitting on front porches any more. Too often, when you're alone on a neighborhood street, you really are all alone and vulnerable.

According to the police report, the robbery (taking the cellphone) took place on Lamont, just off Walbridge. Concerning robberies, this is the third in the past 30 days, which is actually a bit fewer than the monthly average for Mount Pleasant. It is unusual to have them this far west in the neighborhood. -- Jack
