These robberies in Mount Pleasant are troubling, for sure, especially those in which guns are used. Nonetheless, our rate of such crimes is relatively low -- lower than in the rest of 3D, lower than the average for the District. Occasionally someone will complain that Mount Pleasant is a high-crime area. Not so.
Attached, a chart showing the robbery rates, in robberies per month per 1000 residents, for the year 2009. Mount Pleasant (PSA 301) is at the bottom of the chart. The average of 0.4 robberies per month per 1000 residents amounts to 5 robberies per month. Too many, and very worrisome, to be sure. But that's about one-third the robbery rate that prevails in Columbia Heights (PSA 302), right across 16th Street from us. It's not a coincidence that most of the robberies in Mount Pleasant occur east of 18th Street.

| Similarly, Mount Pleasant has relatively low rates of burglary, and thefts from auto. Given the frequency of the latter here, that's a bit of a surprise. -- Jack |
