Not much to say about most crime categories this month, except for robberies, which are up. A couple of these occurred inside elevators in the high-rise apartment buildings on 16th Street. All but one occurred east of 17th Street, which is the usual distribution. Just one robbery, a purse snatch at 18th and Lamont, occurred west of 17th. -- Jack

Is it possible to get information on other types of crimes (specifically, violent ones)? Within the past two weeks there have been a couple of incidents on my block (Park Rd. between 16th and Mt. Pleasant) that I'd like to know more about.
The first incident involved a 16 year old kid getting his face kicked in in front of my house at about 10:30 on a weeknight. I'd like to know if they ever arrested anyone in connection with that. I didn't see what happened but I heard it, and it seemed like a group of kids picked a random victim, which is scary.
The other incident was a domestic violence arrest, which I guess is not as dangerous to random people walking around, but I'm still interested in whether there are reports on this type of crime.

Crime reports can be found here:
http://crimemap.dc.gov/presentation/intro.asp
You can specify "PSA 301" to get everything in Mount Pleasant. Assaults, including domestics, will show up. Drug and prostitution incidents do not.
The information provided is sparse. The best way to find out more is to attend the monthly PSA 301 meeting.

| Huh. The map doesn't show anything happening on my block in the past 30 days. I know the locations aren't exact, but the closest violent crime shown is at Lamont and Mount Pleasant.

I have to wonder how complete these crime statistics are.
My car was broken into (it was parked on Irving Street) and despite calling the police multiple times they never came to take a report. I keep nothing of value in my car so nothing was stolen but I still wanted a report on the broken window, etc. for insurance purposes.
So if my calls went unanswered (granted it was a low-priority crime, but as it was a rainy Monday night I can't imagine there were so many life and death situations that no one could respond), and sarah knows of incidents that didn't appear, I wonder how many other incidents have gone unreported in these statistics.

What matters in the crime statistics is not so much the number as changes in the number. Are robberies up, or down, or unchanged, versus the usual rate? Even then, if the change is less than about a factor of two, it's probably not significant. There's plenty of "noise" in the monthly counts.
As for underreporting, I have to assume that that is constant, whatever the underreporting rate is. This is a great problem in comparing one neighborhood to another. Crimes against Latinos, in particular, are said to be greatly underreported, as victims are reluctant to draw any official attention to themselves and their friends.
