Some of you may have seen this oddity, a hardy palm that grows in Mt. Pleasant. I met and chatted with the owner when I first moved to Mt. Pleasant and he apparently planted it over 20 years ago. This is the needle palm, Rhapidophyllum hystrix, which is native to the southeastern United States but is hardy much farther north than it naturally grows; in fact it is one of the hardiest palm species known. Unlike most palms, it forms only a very short trunk and is named for the needle-like spines that it produces at the leaf bases. There are several growing around town (there is another at 15th & P) but this beautiful specimen is one of the biggest in the city, and possibly the biggest outside the National Arboretum. It looked especially nice after today's dusting of snow:
