Remember: Our ANC is the elected voice of Mount Pleasant to the D.C.
government. You don't have to be a commissioner to join a committee
or work on an ANC community project. Please call us at
462-3595 if you'd like to get involved, or have an idea or
concern to share with us.
Mount Pleasant is an
extremely diverse neighborhood, economically, ethnically, and
politically. It has about 26,000 residents who are Black, White,
Latino, and Asian. Many are recent immigrants and many are long-time
residents. It is about three miles North of the White House between
16th Street and the Washington National Zoo. Much of it
was built around the turn of the century and is a Historic District.
It has a business district, a theater, a public library, two
elementary schools, and many churches.
What is the ANC?
The ANC is an elected DC
government body, created by the city's 1973 Home Rule charter, that
represents all residents of Mount Pleasant. Its job is to advise
city agencies, the Mayor, and City Council on the effectiveness of
existing city programs, laws, and regulations. The Mount Pleasant
ANC is recognized throughout the city as one of the most competent
and effective in Washington.

ANC Commissioners
Each of the six unpaid
Commissioners represents a Single Member District (SMD) of about 2,000
people and serves a 2-year term, elected at the same time as the City
Council elections. Although they have little formal power, the
Commissioners, and their representatives, can and do testify on behalf of
the neighborhood before the Council and regulatory bodies such as the
Alcoholic Beverage Control Board and the Public Service Commission
The ANC holds Business
Meetings, for decision making, on the first Monday of each month at 7:00pm
in the La Casa building.
The ANC often goes beyond its
charter to encourage coordination of consensus-building in the
neighborhood and to serve as a source of information and expertise to
promote citizen participation. With only six members, a small budget, and
a part-time staff, it works through eight committees and made up of
the community members; Alcoholic Beverage Control, Art, Community
Empowerment Policing, Education and Recreation, Environment, Housing and
Economic Development, Public Utilities, and Transportation.
The ANC also works with
and encourages residents to get involved in the many community
organizations that may have interests in powers beyond those of the
Commission, such as Main Street, Inc., the Business Association, Historic
Mount Pleasant, the Neighborhood Alliance, GreenStreets Initiative,
Neighbors' Consejo, individual block associations, and many others. If you
are interested in learning more about the ANC or would like to serve on a
committee, please call (202) 462-3595.
